Critics Without Borders

Critics Without Borders, Nordic countries – Maghreb region 2018

Fifteen film critics from the Nordic countries and the Maghreb region will participate in the workshop that will be held in Malmö, Sweden, October 5-9. During these five days, the critics will participate in both internal and public seminars, panel debates and master classes. With this workshop we want to create a sustainable network of Nordic and Arabic film critics and provide a platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas.

Strengthening democracy and freedom of expression.

The project aims to show, discuss and highlight the importance of film and film criticism. The film critic’s task is to put the films and stories in an artistic, social and political context. It is also their task to provide critical reflections and create broad discussions about pressing topics.

During the months leading to the festival, and the workshop, the participants will have time to read and look at each others work as well as prepare for themes regarding democracy, freedom of speech and censorship/self-censorship. Every day the discussions will be documented, as to keep track of the topics and exchanges. At the end of workshop the participants will gather the discussions and summarize them in to a paper that will be published on our webpage. The paper will be accessible to everyone and will be bilingual (English and Arabic).

The prospect of making the participants’ discussion into an a paper will enable the film critics to continue to work together, collaborate, and contribute to the creation of the future sustainable network of film critics. Through the work with the paper, the participants will continue to be active in the questions that the project seeks to address. Moreover, the paper will hopefully engage writers and filmmakers that have not participated.
