ABOUT FILM
Tunisian director Amel Guellaty confirms her position as one of the emerging cinematic voices with her feature film Where the Wind Comes From, which began a remarkable international journey with its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, one of the most important platforms for independent cinema in the world. Since that premiere, the film has received wide critical and audience acclaim and continued its presence at prestigious international festivals.
The film participated in several prominent festivals, including the Rotterdam International Film Festival, the Istanbul Film Festival, and the Malta Mediterranean Film Festival, in addition to its Arab premiere at the El Gouna Film Festival.
Where the Wind Comes From tells the story of a friendship that transforms into a road trip, where travel becomes a space to explore dreams, freedom, and the desire to escape daily constraints. Guellaty approaches the journey not as an act of escape but as an act of discovery, where personal questions meet a social reality that imposes its limits, without extinguishing the desire for change.
What distinguishes Where the Wind Comes From is its youthful energy and its ability to balance lightness and depth, spontaneity and reflection. The film relies on a lively rhythm and a visual language close to the characters, making the environment a central part of the narrative and turning the road into a space open to possibility, experience, and growth.
The film’s journey has been crowned with several major awards, including Best Arab Narrative Feature at the El Gouna Film Festival and the Golden Bee Award for Best Feature Film at the Malta Mediterranean Film Festival, a dual acknowledgment of its artistic value and its ability to reach diverse audiences.
At the Malmö Arab Film Festival, Where the Wind Comes From offers a vibrant cinematic experience, inviting audiences to discover a film about friendship, dreams, and the search for new horizons, while reaffirming the presence of contemporary Tunisian cinema, capable of speaking to the world with honesty and freedom
