ABOUT FILM

The Emirati director Nayla Al Khaja marks a milestone in the history of Emirati cinema with her feature film Baab, which had its world premiere in the official competition of the 46th Cairo International Film Festival (November 2025). It became the first feature film by an Emirati female director to compete in the official selection of this prestigious festival. This participation highlights the growing presence of Emirati cinema and establishes Nayla Al Khaja as one of the leading female voices in contemporary Arab cinema.

Baab belongs to the psychological drama genre, unfolding within a confined and tension-charged space, where the door transforms from an ordinary architectural element into a central symbol separating what is spoken from what is hidden, and the apparent stability from the disturbed inner world. The film does not rely on dramatic events but builds tension gradually through meticulous details, silence, and a carefully measured rhythm.

What distinguishes the film is its precision in dissecting the characters’ psychological states, and its use of a restrained visual language that makes glances, body movements, and sound essential narrative elements. The camera remains close, yet unobtrusive, observing internal shifts without judgment, while absence — what is unseen behind the door — becomes an integral part of the cinematic experience.

Baab was entirely shot in the United Arab Emirates, giving the film a distinct sense of place, where local spaces intersect with universal human themes such as isolation, social pressure, and the limits of psychological endurance. Nayla Al Khaja continues her cinematic project of confronting the unspoken, raising sensitive questions without being overt or explanatory.

At its screening at the Malmö Arab Film Festival, Baab offers an intense cinematic experience, inviting audiences to engage with a tightly wound psychological drama, opening doors to inner worlds rarely explored in Gulf cinema, while demonstrating the broad artistic horizon of Emirati filmmaking and its capacity to tackle bolder and more complex narrative territories.
