About Film
Saudi filmmaker Hussam Alhulwah brings forward Al Gaid, an epic desert adventure that reimagines the revenge genre through a distinctly Arabian lens. Set in the harsh and wintery landscapes of northern Arabia in the early 20th century, the film blends elements of historical drama, Bedouin storytelling, and cinematic spectacle, marking a notable step in the evolution of Saudi genre filmmaking.
Often described as a bold reinterpretation of both the revenge narrative and traditional Bedouin epics, Al Gaid unfolds as a journey shaped by conflict, honor, and survival. The film draws on themes deeply rooted in the cultural memory of the region, where personal vendettas and tribal codes of justice define the lives of its characters.
The film stars Yaqoub Alfarhan, Khalid Abdulaziz, Asem Alawad, and Thamer Alharbi, whose performances bring intensity and presence to a narrative driven by tension, loyalty, and confrontation. Their portrayals reflect a world shaped by harsh conditions, moral codes, and the enduring weight of past actions.
Visually, Al Gaid stands out through its use of the desert landscape as both setting and narrative force. Expansive, cold terrains and rugged environments create a stark and immersive atmosphere, reinforcing the film’s epic scale. The cinematography places its characters within a vast and unforgiving natural world, emphasizing themes of isolation and survival.
Produced in Saudi Arabia, Al Gaid reflects the growing ambition of the country’s film industry, particularly in its engagement with large-scale storytelling and genre experimentation. By combining historical settings with contemporary cinematic techniques, the film contributes to a broader shift in Saudi cinema toward more expansive and visually driven narratives.
The screening as part of MAFF Arabian Nights marks the film’s European premiere, introducing Al Gaid to the European audiences.
